Lloydminster kicks off Fire Prevention Week

The Lloydminster Fire Department has kicked off Fire Prevention Week.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “Hear the Beep When you Sleep”, focusing on smoke alarm placement.

The department will also be performing voluntary home inspections door-to-door for fire hazards. Jordan Newton, fire chief, says it’s a good way to connect with the community.

“It’s great for us to get out and talk door-to-door,” Newton said. “It gives a chance [to] the community to ask us questions that [are] on their minds, as well as us to go over fire safety tips… Most homes that we go to do have small fire hazards, so it’s just about mitigating those small hazards before they become something big.

Newton also says the department is also planning a celebration for later this week.

“I’d like to urge all [of] the community to come out to our annual open house,” Newton said. “That’s Thursday, October 8th, 6 until 8 [p.m], with 6 o’clock being a big unveiling of our two brand new fire trucks, so it’ll be a great community event… That will be held at fire station number two over by Lakeland College.”

The department also has appointments throughout the week to visit elementary schools across the city, to educate children on the importance of fire safety.
