The government of Alberta is considering new accountability rules due to the controversy surrounding Jeff Mulligan.
Last week, the city announced that an RCMP review of the former mayor’s contract with the city had been forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecutors’ Office, which found that no criminal charges could be laid against the city or Mulligan’s company, AHHA Moments.
The Edmonton Sun reports that this week, a spokeperson for Municipal Affairs Minister Deron Bilous says the government will be reviewing legislation designed to make city governments accountable.
“Under the Municipal Government Act (MGA), municipalities are first and foremost accountable to their residents,” said spokesperson Shannon Greer. “We are aware of the situation and under the ongoing MGA review are examining whether additional tools to enhance municipal accountability are required.”
Mulligan maintains that his negotiations with the city were conducted in good faith.
