Seven in custody after attempted tractor theft

A joint police investigation is underway tonight after an attempted theft south of Lloydminster.

While an exact timeline on the entire incident remains unclear, seven people are in custody after a failed attempt at stealing a tractor from a farm south of the Border City. Social media lit up with news of the incident around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday night, after a large police presence was noticed headed south of Lloydminster.

Units from the Kitscoty RCMP and the Lloydminster RCMP were observed at the scene by 106.1 The Goat, as well as members of the Lloydminster Rescue Squad and EMS workers.

According to Sgt. Juan Huss of the Kitscoty RCMP, the incident began when a vehicle broke down on Township Road 490, close to the intersection of Range Road 13. Four occupants of the vehicle then walked eastbound down the road, where they came to the property containing the tractor. After stealing the tractor, they then proceeded eastward to Highway 17.

“The family (at the property) was aware that the tractor was stolen, I don’t know if they followed it, but somebody was able to disable the tractor by taking the keys away,” said Huss.

“At this point, we have seven people in custody and we’re trying to figure out how many of them were actually involved with the whole incident.”

Medical workers at the scene also had to deal with a female who had been struck by the tractor.

“It sounds like somebody was riding in the tractor and fell out of the bucket,” said Huss.

All seven remain in custody at this time, and the investigation is being handled by both detachments.

“We’re fortunate that Lloydminster was able to send us some resources to help us out,” said Huss.

Lloyd Flewell, a local farmer who was present at the incident scene and lives in the area, said he had been called by his neighbours after the tractor was stolen, asking for help to find the vehicle.

“We just made sure they (the police) knew where they (the suspects) were when they got here, stayed out of harm’s way,” said Flewell.

“We’re neighbours, so you try and keep peace in the country.”
