Britannia Wilton Fire Department assets being appraised

The process of carving up the Britannia Wilton Fire Department (BWFD) has gotten underway.

According to Councilor Kim Schindel with the Rural Municipality of Britannia, appraisals on the assets of the BWFD have begun, which is part of the ongoing process to dissolve the combined fire service.

Schindel also said a definite decision on whether or not the assets will be divided between Britannia and the Rural Municipality of Wilton has not yet been made. Another option would be a total asset sale. Schindel said the decision would have to be determined by both councils, with a timeline on the matter still unclear.

Schindel also said the current volunteers with the BWFD would be able to choose their path after the service is ended.

“At this point in time, we’re not requiring any firm commitment, but they are welcome to join the Britannia Fire Department going forward, and if they choose to go somewhere else, we wish them well,” said Schindel.

As for any changes to the tax levels of Britannia residents due to the changes in fire services, Schindel said she does not anticipate any.

“Eventually, we think we may get to the point where it may be a cheaper service we can provide for them,” said Schindel.

The BWFD was formed in 1990, following the merger of fire services from both rural municipalities. It currently has 30 volunteer members.
