Maidstone RCMP warn of paving scam

You may want to think twice about that bargain paving job.

According to the Maidstone RCMP, multiple residents in the detachment’s coverage area have been approached by people who appear to be working in the area, specifically on the highway, or are ‘travelling through’ and have leftover paving supplies. They offer the resident to pave an area of their property, for a low price, with the police saying that more work is sometimes done then what was expected.

The police also said that a variety of the incidents involving the paving offer have resulted in the sellers seeking a significantly higher price than was previously discussed, or never coming back to finish work after a down payment is handed over.

According to the Maidstone detachment, the individuals running the scam are well-organized, with professional-looking pamphlets and handouts, along with ‘construction type’ vehicles matching the apparent paving work. They also indicated that a common factor in the complaints is that the men had an Irish or foreign accent.

The detachment advised the public to contact police if they are approached by the individuals involved in the scam.

Further questions on the matter, such as the name of the group conducting the scam or the number of complaints, were not able to be answered by the detachment at this time. As more official information becomes available, this story will be updated.
