Lakeland students learn about winter wheat from DUC

Lakeland College students have a chance to learn a little more about winter wheat in a unique land reclamation project. The College has partnered with Ducks Unlimited Canada to plant and harvest winter wheat on some land the organization recently acquired, known as the Driver Project. The project has 38 ponds on it, making the habitat perfect for ducks. The organization decided to plant winter wheat, as it provides good nesting area for ducks. . Conservation Specialist and Land Negotiator Bryon Wolters says that nest survival rate is greater in winter wheat than in other cereals, because the nests aren’t disturbed by farmers.
