49th Avenue Temporarily Renamed Veteran’s Way

In support of Wounded Warriors Weekend, the City will be temporarily renaming 49th Avenue to Veteran’s Way from July 21-30. This comes along with the weekend of July 27-30 being proclaimed as ‘Wounded Warriors Weekend.’

“The temporary renaming of the street is certainly a way to help show a visual example to those veterans that we appreciate their support,” says Mayor Gerald Aalbers.

He adds, “Remembrance Day comes once a year, but I think that’s something we can do everyday.”

It hasn’t been ruled out that this renaming could become permanent, however right now there are no regulations regarding street being renamed. This particular avenue had two groups ask for it to be named after them at a previous Governance and Priorities Committee Meeting, one being The Royal Canadian Legion asking for it to be named Veteran’s Way; the other being the Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association asking for it to be named Exhibition Drive.

“We’ll be coming forward with a policy to ensure other streets and avenues may be renamed and we do it right the first time,” says Mayor Aalbers.

On July 27, the City is encouraging residents to come down to corner of 59 avenue and College Drive at 8 p.m. in front of the entrance to Lakeland College to welcome the Wounded Warriors Weekend participants.
