Witnesses help RCMP arrest vehicle theft suspects

A chaotic attempted vehicle theft has led to charges against two people. Battleford RCMP say a man and a woman tried to steal a vehicle from a work site on Highway 40 roughly five kilometres east of North Battleford shortly after noon Friday.

When they were interrupted by several witnesses, the man tried to flee the scene in the vehicle but got stuck in the ditch. The woman tried to drive off in a different vehicle, but got stuck in the snow and had to abandon it. Police say she allegedly tried to hit a witness with the vehicle, but they were able to get out of the way unhurt.

Another witness was able to hold down the man and he was arrested nearby. The woman made it some distance on foot, but was tracked down with the help of witnesses and was taken into custody.

It turns out the pair had come to the job site in another stolen Alberta vehicle. The 32 year old man and 37 year old woman from Alberta are facing charges of theft of a vehicle and two counts of possession of stolen property. The woman is also charged with dangerous driving.

RCMP say both were wanted on warrants out of the Swift Current area in connection with several vehicles stolen this summer. They remain in custody and will appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on Monday.
