AHS warns some overdose kits missing vials

Alberta Health Services is warning anyone with a naloxone kit to double check that it is properly stocked with supplies.

AHS has received reports that some of the kits may have been distributed to clinics without the vials of the drug. Each kit should contain two or three vials of naloxone along with two or three needles. Other contents will include alcohol swabs, gloves and a breathing mask.

The kits are supplied to clinics and pharmacies by a third-party distributor. AHS says they are working closely with them to determine how the vials were missed and how many kits might be affected.

Incomplete kits will be replaced, free of charge. Questions about naloxone can be directed to Health Link by calling 811. Kits are available at most local pharmacies. Through 2017 more than 41,000 naloxone kits were handed out around Alberta.
