The City’s East Drainage channel showing significant amount of erosion

Lloydminster’s East Drainage channel where 90 per cent of the city’s storm water goes is seeing significant erosion issues.

The drainage channel is located east of 40 avenue and is in preparations for the East Drainage Channel Rehabilitation Project.

The first signs of erosion came in 2013 and by 2016 a large amount of erosion had begun to form on the channel. After the city experienced an immense amount of rain in 2017, an area of the channel started to erode and in the fall a rip rap was placed to prevent further damages.

A Consulting Engineer is needed to find a permanent resolution to the problem and Mayor Gerald Aalbers says it is necessary to fix the issue before it gets worse.

“From an engineering perspective this is not a good position to be in. When you have erosion it will only get worse and then to a point you actually have critical failure of some sort of portion of that structure.”

The project was approved in the city budget at a cost of 1 million and construction will begin as early as July 1st, 2018 and is expected to be complete by the end of September.
