Rivers West takes 3rd at 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games

The Rivers West team will have a lot of medals to take home after the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games.

The Team, which has athletes from Lloydminster to North Battleford, ended up taking home 69 medals in total.This put them in 3rd overall won 21 gold, 26 silver and 22 bronze.

Lloydminster dominated in judo, with Devrie Johnston and Jessen Brust taking gold in the women’s and men’s judo competition, Brooklyn Bloch-Hansen and Ryley James McGarry winning silver and Avery McGarry and Marrisa Howdle taking women’s bronze. Yby Lim was part of the bronze winning Rivers West Table tennis team, and Ian Nakonechy and Crobin Wetsch helped take the bronze for bowling.

The events saw young athletes from throughout the province, some of whom had competed before and some who this Sask Games was their first. One of those athletes was 12-year old Kaibre Lumbard, who took home gold in the solo synchronized swimming event. Lumbard says that she brought all she had to the table.

“I think that mine was super quick, and I had lots of pretty hard movements in it. And even if I messed up I still stayed focused, kept going and wouldn’t stop.”

Lumbard adds that the Games were very competitive with all the athletes out for gold. and says she was elated at her win.

“I was really excited, I was so happy, because I’ve worked so hard these past years and I’m just so happy to know it’s paid off.”
