Alberta high school students could be an MLA for a day

The Legislative Assembly of Alberta is looking for students who want to get involved in provincial politics.

The MLA for a Day program is being offered to Alberta high school students from grades 10 to 12 who want to learn the role of government and understand the responsibilities of a Member of the Legislative Assembly.

MLA for Vermilion Lloydminster Dr. Richard Starke says that this is an opportunity for young people to get involved and find their voice in politics.

“We want to know that the next generation of leaders is being groomed and being encouraged to get involved in the political process.”

Students in the program will spend three days in Edmonton visiting the Alberta Legislature, listening to speakers and will get the chance to sit in on a debate at the Assembly Chamber. Starke says that he has heard a lot of people be cynical towards politics and hopes this program will help change that. As well as, help students find an appreciation for the democratic process.

“I think that this kind of program helps students gain a better understanding as to what’s involved with influencing government policy and how you go about doing that and becoming more engaged citizens.”

The deadline to submit applications is March 23, 2018.
