Lakeland College raising funds for student scholarships with gala

Lakeland College is holding its sixth annual President’s Gala in order to raise funds for student scholarship programs.

Last year the event raised $50,000 and President and CEO of Lakeland College Alice Wainwright-Stewart says this years proceeds will go to building their bursary fund.

“The purpose of this is to support students who face financial barriers and struggle to fund their post secondary education costs.”

She adds that the college did a survey that found one in six people who are accepted into the college don’t attend because of financial challenges. Wainwright-Stewart is hoping to change that by increasing their scholarship funds.

A recipient of the scholarship program Stephanie Wakefield says that last year Lakeland gave out $1.5 million in scholarship and bursaries to students on both the Vermilion and Lloydminster campuses.

“I am an award recipient myself so I just felt that it was really important to give back and to help next year’s recipients with their funding.”

Wakefield will be an emcee for the event, along with international student Matt Peck. The evening will include a raffle, silent auction and entertainment from singer Jully Black.

The event will be taking place April 13 at the Lloydminster campus.
