Rural Skills Tour makes debut in the Battlefords

More than 50 post secondary students studying in health fields got a taste of what it’s like working in smaller Saskatchewan cities.

The first Rural Skills Tour lead by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) brought students from Saskatoon and Regina to smaller Saskatchewan communities. SHA Director of Human Resources Carol Rohovich says places like the Battlefords and rural areas across the province have a lot to offer health professionals in both work life and quality of life.

“Anything we can do to introduce students to these opportunities is valuable for the students, local health professionals, and rural communities.”

Students who participated in the tour are studying nursing, medical laboratory technology and medicine. SHA says exposing students to rural communities improves the chances of recruiting them after graduation.

The tour allowed health and medical students to shadow professionals from various disciplines working at Battlefords Union Hospital and Saskatchewan Hospital.

The tour took place Saturday, March 17 at the Battlefords Union Hospital.
