Britannia firefighters recognized for years of service

Several Britannia Fire Department Volunteers Firefighters were commended Saturday night for their years of service.

At the 25th Annual Firefighter’s Ball, Jayden Hallett, Matthew Carlin Michael Gray and Nick Zadery received honours for five years of service, Deputy Chief Aaron Buckingham was awarded for 20 years, and Dave Wallace being recognized for 25 years.

Zadery says he’s proud of the work the firefighters do to keep the community safe, and was happy to see the crew get recognized.

“It feels more than gracious to have the community recognize our years of service and the hours that we put in. It’s an unbeatable feeling.”

Deputy Chief Buckingham shared these sentiments, and praised the dedication of volunteer firefighters to community safety, and said that anyone who joins takes on a huge commitment.

In addition to recognizing the firefighters, the night raised money for Hillmond Central School, to go towards scholarships for community volunteering students and AED medical equipment for their gym.

“That scholarship is important to me,” says Buckingham, “To see a community minded grade 12 graduating student, I think that’s a real cool thing we can do. As guys who are community minded and volunteer as well. And having that medical equipment up there, hopefully they never have to use it, but if they do hopefully one day it saves a life.”

All ticket sales from the Firefighters Ball went towards these initiatives.
