100 more affordable child care centres to open across Alberta including in Kitscoty

Kitscoty Community Cabin 4 Kids will be among 100 Early Learning and Child Care Centres (ELCC) opening across Alberta. Premier Rachel Notley announced Wednesday that there will be 82 current centres transitioning into $25 a day child care and 18 new centres being created with the expansion of the program.

Cabin 4 Kids will be among the 82 centres transitioning to affordable day cares. Executive Director Tracee Hamel says that they received $443,000 in grant funding from the program and will implement the $25 a day on May 1.

“We’re really hoping to utilize the funding to provide workshops for both parents and children once a month to help them with different issues that they’re experiencing.”

The expansion will help parents save $425 a month, as well as create 400 child care jobs. Hamel says that they will be adding more staff to their team with one full time position and once casual position.

“A lot of the funding will be going towards professional development for my staff and myself to stay up to date with best practices and current child theories.”

Currently the centre has 39 families equaling to 82 children.

There are 22 centres already operating in Alberta and the expansion will provide parents with nearly five times as many affordable child care options that currently exist.
