A new ballet program coming to Holy Rosary

Holy Rosary High School and Alberta Ballet are partnering up to offer students a new dance program. On Monday, the Lloydminster Catholic School Division announced two new programs that will incorporate dance into the curriculum.

Holy Rosary High School (HRHS) is one of the schools integrating a dance class into everyday learning. Principal of HRHS Vince Orieux says that it’s an added element that will help students with their learning.

“It just gives kids opportunity to perform outside of an academic class where they are free to express themselves and can have fun in a passion area, but at the same time doing it at school.”

The program will allow students to get credits and Orieux says that there are dance credits already available so adding the class will be a seamless transition.

Grade 11 Student at HRHS Emily Wildeman has been dancing since she was a toddler and says that having an Alberta Ballet instructor is going to help her grow her skills.

“I think that’s such a good opportunity for all of us because they work with such amazing dancers so to have them coming to Lloydminster to work with us I think that’s such a good opportunity.”

HRHS offers various sports programs and Wildeman says that it’s nice to have dance recognized as well.

“I think that dance isn’t respected as much as the other sports sometimes so I think it’s really important that there’s programs like this that people recognize it for what it really is.”

The dance class will accommodate 30 to 40 people without compromising the learning aspect says Orieux. The program will be offered to students in the fall.
