Grain farmers exempt from Alberta highway road bans
Starting today, Alberta farmers will be able to obtain free permits to haul grain on provincial highways when road bans are in effect. Farmers transporting grain from storage to elevators will be exempt from vehicle weight restrictions on provincial highways. Permits will be available at no cost for grain trucks to travel at 100 per cent axle weight on banned roads, as long as these roads are not damaged in the process. Transportation Minister Wayne Drysdale says relaxing road ban limits at a time when farmers need flexibility is the right thing to do. The special permits will be in effect from now until June 30. Alberta Transportation staff are monitoring road conditions and will suggest alternate travel routes if necessary to keep motorists safe and protect highway infrastructure.
