Funds from the Firefighters Ball brings medical equipment into school

Hillmond Central School’s newly renovated gym is prepped in the case of an emergency.

The Britannia Fire Department throws the Firefighters ball every year to celebrate the dedication of their crew and to raise money to put back into the community.

Deputy Chief of the Britannia Fire Department Aaron Buckingham says all the funds raised at the ball went towards HCS in the form of a $1,000 scholarship, an AED and medical kit to place in their gym.

“The gyms being utilized a lot more than it used to be so we wanted to make sure we had that safety equipment there and we made enough money at the fireman’s ball to be able to provide that for them.”

Vice Principal of Hillmond Central School Leah Huff points out the importance of the equipment as there isn’t a hospital nearby in case of an emergency.

“We had previously looked at getting a grant for it (AED and medical kit) but we weren’t able to and then the fire department said they would.”

Buckingham adds the Firemans Ball was never designed to make money. Once the event started earning funds he says the department took much pride in giving back to the community that has always supported them.
