Border City Rotary donates $35,500 to local programs

Border City Rotary Club has donated funds to five local projects in Lloydminster.

The funds were raised through the clubs annual Irish Pub Night. This year the donations totalled over $35,000, where 70 per cent of the money raised goes to local projects. Financial Planner for the Club Les Hanson says a portion of the funds will also go towards their student programming.

“So we have an international exchange student where we help with the other club sponsor money to go to send one student abroad and then we host one student. This year we have a girl coming in from Denmark who will be our exchange student here living in Lloyd for a year.”

Five out of six programs that applied for the funds were accepted. Hanson says there is a criterion set out for the applicants and a request process for the money. He says this year the club was able to match what all five people requested.

Some of the projects receiving funding include the Lloydminster RCMP for their Keep Straight project that sees players from the Bobcats visiting East Hasting street in Vancouver. The trip is intended for the players to talk to addicts about the issues they face and then make a video to show grade six students in the Lloydminster.

Also on the list of projects is the Ignite Boys Conference, a new boiler for the Community Youth Centre, and Kaebri Memorial project, which provides families with care bags for when women who are pregnant go into labour earlier than expected.

Lastly, the Lloydminster Rescue Squad will be making presentations to schools about distracted driving with their funds in the fall. Hanson says their clubs focus has always been on the youth more so than any other age group.

“Just to empower and to strengthen and to give some understanding and some choices to the young people. They’ll be looking after us as we get older so they are the future of our community.”
