Lakeland College student wins silver at Alberta Skills’

Lakeland College apprentice finishes in second-place at the 2018 Alberta Provincial Skills Canada Competition.

Steamfitter/pipefitter apprentice Lindsay Graham says she didn’t expect to finish so high in the competition but she is glad she did as a representative for Lakeland College.

“Although I did expect to place, I did not expect to be second, but it was an awesome
experience and a first for me. I’m proud to have represented Lakeland. I don’t think I would
have had the opportunity or desire to compete if I went to a different school,”

Graham says the desire to compete came from the staff at Lakeland and the confidence they gave her.

“They helped me beyond words and I couldn’t be more grateful for
how much they have taught me. That boost in confidence now helps me achieve more in my
work.”

The twelve-hour competition tested participates skill and understanding of pipe systems and the components involved with a focus on quality, workmanship and accuracy as well. The biggest thing Graham said she noticed was the women watching her compete.

“I saw the people that walked by, including young women, and I could see the curiosity in
some of their faces. I wish I could have talked to them and told them all about pipefitting.
In the end, it was quite the experience.’
