City to continue Student Access Agreement with Lakeland College

Lakeland College is looking to renew an agreement with the City that allows their students to access recreation facilities at a discounted price.

In 2015, Lakeland and the City entered into a Student Access Agreement giving full-time students at the Lloydminster campus membership access to the Servus Sports Centre and Leisure Centre during months when students are enrolled in classes. City Councillor Jonathan Torresan says it’s a good partnership to continue.

“It’s awesome for people to get use of our facilities and for those individuals if they decide to stay in Lloydminster see what a great place it is to live in and all sorts of different things to do.”

The current agreement sees each student paying $48.50, along with an additional $5 fee to activate the membership. A new three-year agreement will see students paying $50 for the 2018/2019 school year and for each of the next two years the price will increase by $1.50. Torresan says the $50 fee is dependent on the number of students using the facilities.

“There becomes a question of how many users there actually is versus what it otherwise would bail out to if they were just to use a student discount, but from my understanding, the numbers are pretty fair between the two parties as far as giving them access while also getting an appropriate dollar amount.”

In 2017, the City made $22,795. 23 off of the membership fees not including the activation fee. The agreement still needs to be approved by council before it is finalized.
