An officer on the Elk Point RCMP has killed a man in Frog Lake First Nation after a standoff.

On Thursday at 10 am, police were searching for a wanted male related to a robbery. The RCMP located the man at a family home in Frog Lake, where he refused to exit the residence.

During the process of the police getting a warrant, the Emergency Response Team responded to contain the residence. ERT attempted to negotiate the man’s peaceful arrest for hours.

Around 9 pm, a confrontation led to an RCMP member shooting the man. No officers were hurt and there was no concern for public safety during the incident. Investigators recovered a sawed-off firearm at the scene.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will focus on the conduct of police and the situation surrounding the officer-involved shooting. The RCMP will remain the lead investigators on the events leading up to the shots being fired.
