Central Mountain Air suspending flights for August

The Lloydminster Airport will no longer have two flight carriers, at least for August.

Central Mountain Air announced last week that they will be suspending their flights in and out of the airport for the month. The decision comes about a month after the first Westjet flight landed in Lloydminster.

President of CMA Douglas McCrea says the main reason for the suspended flights is the low booking volumes for the summer.

“Since the entrance of a new carrier we have noticed a big decrease in our load factor and the advanced booking for both July and August. At the end of the day, we wanted to review the operation to confirm it’s viable to go forward.”

CMA has been operating in the city for about 16 years with seven flights going out of the airport each week. McCreas says no jobs will be lost with the suspension.

“We’re going with the full staff, our regular staffing schedule for the month of August and to be decided as we do our review as to how we’re going to go forward.”

McCrea adds that they will make a decision on continuing services in the city by mid-August.

As for those people who have already booked a flight with CMA for August will have the option of being reimbursed or switching to a WestJet flight.
