Lloydminster receives about $1 million from federal gas tax

Just over $1 million will be going to Lloydminster from the federal government’s Gas Tax Fund. $114.7 million is the first of two instalments the Government of Canada will give Alberta annually for a total of $229.5 million.

Mayor Gerald Aalbers says the money has to be allocated towards city projects.

“Capital projects I believe is what it has to be directed to so that is what’s in return basically funding some of the road work that’s been going on and things like that.”

The GTF supports local infrastructure projects in different cities across the province each year in order to promote economic growth. Roads, water systems and recreation buildings are some of the eligible projects that will be approved for funding under the program.

“We have to apply and there’s a process that we go through. We say this is the projects that we want to do or we complete and then they come back with the funding afterwards,” says Aalbers.

The city is receiving a total of $1,083,502 in the first instalment.
