Lloydminster high school students to conduct experiments on tomatoes from space

Five Lloydminster teens will be heading to Saskatoon this month to conduct experiments on tomatoes.

The teens are students in the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School’s science club, and they have been studying tomatoes grown from seeds taken on the International Space Station as part of the Tomatosphere Project. The project will allow the students to take the tomatoes to a scientific machine called a synchotron to determine their makeup, and how exposure to cosmic radiation has made them different earth-grown tomatoes.

The students hope that their experiments will help determine if the tomatoes will help in the colonization of Mars.

They  will present their findings to professional scientists at the end of their experiments, and may even get their findings published in a scientific journal.
