Local artist dressing up downtown with mural

A new mural is almost complete in downtown Lloydminster. Local visual artist Brandi Hofer has been working for the past month on a painting to brighten up the city’s core.

Hofer says the project started after she reached out to Red Bicycle Communications asking if any local businesses downtown were interested in a mural and sure enough one did.

Hofer says she began working with the owner of Assured Occupational Testing Jon Rokochy to display an image of a boy and a fire truck on the south exterior wall of the business.

“We worked together to find something unique for the community. We wanted it to be fun and inspirational.”

Hofer says after some back and forth they decided on an abstract piece with bright colours.

At the beginning of August, she began painting the mural and is now in the final stretch with hopes of finishing in the next two weeks.

She says this is her first exterior mural and it required a lot of research, as well as materials.

“It’s time-consuming because it is cinder block brick and they’re really absorbent and they’re textured so it’s hard to paint on the surface in good time.”

The 48 feet by 14 feet mural has already attracted some buzz by local residents.

“Every time I’m there I catch families taking pictures in front of it already, which is funny because I’m like this isn’t done. It looks a little bit funny right now to me, but maybe it looks great to other people already.”

Hofer says with the Downtown Area Revitalization Plan there will be more opportunities to beautify the downtown and draw more businesses to the area.
