Husky oil spill case adjourned again

A Saskatchewan Provincial Court judge has adjourned the Husky Energy case until November 22. The company is facing both provincial and federal charges for an oil spill into the North Saskatchewan River in 2016.

A joint adjournment request was made Thursday by Husky’s lawyer Brad Gilmore and Carol Carlson representing prosecutor Matthew Miazga via a telephone conference in a Lloydminster courtroom.

Gilmore said additional disclosure information was received from the crown prosecutor on July 10 requiring more time to review the material. He adds that they have had several discussions with federal and provincial crowns since their last court date on June 21 in Lloydminster.

Husky Energy Inc. and Husky Oil Operations Ltd. are facing a total of 10 charges, including eight under the federal Fisheries Act, one under the federal Migratory Birds Convention Act and one under the provincial Environmental Management and Protection Act.

The oil spill was from a pipeline near Maidstone that forced several communities, including North Battleford to shut down their river intakes and find another way to supply water to their residents.

Husky had their first court appearance on March 29.
