As glimpses of winter pop up in Lloydminster, RCMP wants you to be prepared. Environment Canada has public weather alerts for Alberta this week with temperatures dropping and 5 to 15 cms of snow in regions across the province.
Constable Grant Kirzinger is advising drivers in Lloydminster to prepare for winter conditions and adjust road habits accordingly.
“Now that winter driving is coming, the biggest thing to keep in mind is speed. Always slow down for traffic providing more space in between your vehicles in case those streets are icy or slippery.”
Alberta released information to help drivers adjust to road conditions. Some of the reminders for drivers include posted speed limits, they are meant for summer conditions, drivers are asked to slow down and drive for the intended weather. 511 Alberta is also available to help drivers know current road conditions. Constable Kirzinger says visibility plays a role in winter collisions but speed and following distance is a major factor.
“Anything that will cause a reduction in friction is a concern on the roadways. Stopping distance is extremely important and anytime you change that it becomes a concern for drivers.”
