Local man raising money to supply food to the community

Resident Dustin Fair is looking to help aid hunger in the Lloydminster community. In a week’s time, Fair has raised $8,730 to buy food for local shelters and food banks in the area.

He says after learning about the breakfast programs in the Lloydminster schools he wanted to do his part by reaching out to local businesses to help in his initiative.

“I started looking and talking with the food banks, shelters and stuff like that. There’s quite an outreach for food right now and [shelters] are not always fully funded to cover the problem.”

Fair began fundraising earlier in the week after putting in a $1,000 of his own money and asking local business to match. He says his employer, Carpet Superstore has matched his donation, as well as Moose Lodge, Paramount Flooring and other businesses.

He has also partnered with Sobeys for a $1,000 food match and the Olive Tree.

“The Olive Tree is going to talk with the shelters, food banks and everybody and get a list together of what is needed and what they’re short on this time of year. Then relay that information to Sobeys, who willing to put together a food hamper with all the stuff.”

The Olive Tree will then disperse the food throughout the community. Fair says he will also take some of the money he has kicked in along with a few other donations to help stock the shelves for the Men’s shelter.

“I asked them what they would want for Thanksgiving dinner and they actually gave me a menu. I’m going to supply them with the groceries they need to put on a Thanksgiving dinner for the guys that’ll be staying there.”

Fair says the food will be donated at the beginning of October. Until then people can help with Fair’s fundraiser by contacting the Olive Tree or Sobeys. Fair says his goal is to raise about $10,000 to $20,000.

“I’d like to take a massive chunk out of hunger and just make sure everyone has enough to eat. Everyone deserves to eat as far as I’m concerned.”
