Lloydminster and District Co-op’s Fuel Good Day has raised $9,800 for breakfast programs at schools in and around the city. Last week, residents who filled up their vehicles at any Co-op gas bar saw five cents per litre going towards kids meals.
$6,300 was raised for both Lloydminster school divisions through pump sales and $3,500 was raised through barbecue sales for rural school divisions.
Marketing and Communications Manager for Lloydminster Co-op Kristine Knourek says from the time they opened their gas stations to the time they closed people were fueling up for a good cause.
“At all three of our Lloyd Co-op gas stations, we saw people come out in droves. Teachers and families with their kids driving from sports events or driving to band practice or whatever it may be that they were doing they came out to fill their vehicles and fill their stomach with barbecue.”
Lloydminster Catholic School Division’s Director of Education Nigel McCarthy says the breakfast program is an opportunity for each child to get the nutrition they need before learning.
“Without a breakfast, it’s very difficult for any child to be able to learn. We want to make sure if that’s not something the kids arrive at our doors having done that it’s there for every child every morning.”
Lloydminster Co-op says they hope to continue the program for a third year in 2019.
