SHA warns about increase of syphilis in Lloydminster area

The Saskatchewan Health Authority is reminding people to get tested after an increase of syphilis cases in recent months.

According to the Medical Health Officer for North Battleford Dr. Mandiangu Nsungu, Lloydminster has seen no cases of the sexually transmitted infection reported until May. However, since then they have seen almost the maximum syphilis cases they would see in an entire year.

SHA is asking people to take preventative practices to reduce the risk of infection.

“It is important that individuals who are sexually active know their own status for all sexually transmitted infections, including syphilis. Knowing your status means we can provide treatment, as well as help individuals reduce the risk of spreading the illness,” said Dr. Nsungu in a statement.

In Saskatchewan, the number of syphilis cases has increased over the past three years. In 2015, there were 24 cases, 85 cases in 2016 and 120 cases in 2017. Through August 31, there have been 72 cases in the province.
