Lloydminster set to celebrate Culture Days

Lloydminster will be taking part in the year’s Culture Days. The event sees communities across Canada celebrating art and culture in their region.

Recreation programmer for the Lloydminster Cultural and Science Centre Sarah Hockridge says this year’s theme of “OnBeat” will be acknowledged through the activities they will be hosting.

“Every organization that participated in Culture Days they try to do something on the theme so drumming, music anything that gets people dancing to a beat. That’s why we’re going to be making some drums Friday night and all day on Saturday.”

Culture Days will be celebrated for its 7th year on Friday and Saturday at the LCSC. Hockridge says this year they will be hosting free activities for both days unlike previous year’s where events were held only on Saturday.

“We’re partnering with the Native Friendship Centre to paint rocks for a permanent rock garden that will be placed here in the courtyard in honour of the residential school survivors. They’ll also be making mini woven tipis that can sit up on your tabletop.”

Other activities include painting classes, cultural dances, an art show and yoga.

“This is an opportunity to view the diverse culture within Lloydminster and it’s an opportunity to try something perhaps new. Those that come to the centre on a regular basis they get to see the different events that we’re able to offer and stick around and try a bunch of activities while they’re here.”
