Ticks stay active in cooler months: Government of Saskatchewan

Lloydminster residents are asked to take precautions against ticks when outside.

According to a Saskatchewan press release, black-legged ticks are most active in the cooler months of October, November and April.  The insect is rare within the province but is capable of carrying Lyme disease bacteria.

Ticks have been collected in the moist mixed-grass prairie, aspen parkland and boreal transition areas throughout Saskatchewan including the Lloydminster area. They are most likely dropped off from birds migrating through these areas in the spring.

Anyone enjoying the outdoors in the next couple of months is asked to use insect repellent containing DEET.  People are asked to check themselves, children and pets afterwards.  If ticks are found, they can be removed with tweezers.

Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Dr.Denise Werker says the risk of Lyme disease is low in the province but not zero.
