UPDATE:Lloydminster moves up list of Canada’s Most Dangerous Places: StatsCan

Update: The story has been updated to include comments from Constable Grant Kirzinger

Lloydminster has risen to 13th overall in Maclean’s Canada’s Most Dangerous Places list. The study uses data from the 2017 Crime Severity Index, which measures all police-reported crimes.

Last year’s list had Lloydminster ranking at number 14 overall. According to the CSI, non-violent crimes in the Border City have gone up mainly due to fraud, drug trafficking, and firearm offences. Constable Grant Kirzinger says the slight ranking increase doesn’t mean there has been large number of offences.

“With statistical analysis there is a lot of different variables that occur. Moving up or down either way shows a small change in overall levels of crime within the city.”

Lloydminster also ranks 7th for firearm offences and cocaine trafficking. Violent crime in Lloydminster has gone down, lowering from 65th overall last year to 85th. Kirzinger believes that the violent crime reduction is a positive takeaway from the study.

“The Lloydminster RCMP has been working hard and focusing on many different types of crimes in the Border City. The Maclean’s article shows that the violent crime has gone down quite significantly inside the Border City and that is a sentiment to the hard work of the many different sections and aspects of the Lloydminster RCMP”

North Battleford’s crime rate made little change as they still sit at number one on the most dangerous places list. Since 2012, the city has seen a decrease in drug trafficking, youth crimes, robberies and assaults. Crime and violent crime has gone up overall in the last year.
