Lloydminster joins together to support children in need

The Lloydminster community has come together for another year to support Operation Christmas Child.

The project, which is run by the Samaritan’s Purse charity, provides shoeboxes to local residents, businesses and schools. The goal of the project is to fill the boxes with basic necessities. The boxes are then sent countries around the world for children in need. Inside of them are items for hygiene, school supplies, toys, books and tools so the older children can help their parents.

This week is when the boxes are sent to Calgary for further inspection. Samaritan’s Purse Logistics Co-ordinator Ruby Trudell says by people coming together both in Lloydminster and the international community it has a massive effect every year.

“The children that are receiving these boxes have never received a gift from anybody. Ever. For any reason, at any time. This will be the only gift they’ve ever received. That’s the level of poverty of the countries that we’re going into. So these boxes have a massive impact on children.”

Trudell adds she distinctly remembers a young girl in Sarajevo who was able to start expressing herself and began journaling for the first time in her life after receiving a box, and the emotional power these shoeboxes have help kids learn and grow.

“It is encouragement, it uplifts them, it makes them feel loved and that life is worth living.”
