Lloydminster C.O.P receives donation helping further cause

Any sum of money can go a long when it is a city you’re trying to keep safe. Citizens on Patrol have receivedĀ a $1,000 donation from Lloyd Co-op to help with operations.

The Volunteer based group act as an extra set of eyes for police, phoning in any suspicious activity when patrolling. President of C.O.P Greg Mathias says the donation will help with a number needs such gas and insurance for the three patrol vehicles.

“We are planning on buying some equipment. Some different flashlights, you know, brighter bigger flashlights and some vest for our vehicles so that if the member needs to get out of the vehicle for any reason, they have a vest.”

Mathias says all funding comes through fundraisers and donations.

“We do Safe Ride Home. We’re asked to go to a Christmas party or a wedding, pick up the people and weĀ also pick up theirĀ vehicle and get them both home safe. We do bartending for those events as well if we’re asked and barbeques in the summertime.”

The number of calls theyĀ make isn’tĀ recorded but Mathias says theyĀ make roughly 2-3 calls a weekend.

“Let’s say we see a drunkĀ driver out on the road, we make a phone call and call thatĀ person in, the RCMP at that point take over. We generallyĀ don’t know what the outcome of all that was.”

The patrol currently has 22 members, Mathias says the goal is to reach 50 members. Anyone looking to join the C.O.P can reach Greg Mathias 780-205-9912.
