Mount Joy opening delayed due to weather

Due to recent unseasonable weather, Snowboarders and Skiers in Lloydminster may need to wait to hit the slopes. Mount Joy President Dean Peters says they planned to open this Saturday, but mother nature threw them a curve ball.

“Just before the new year, we were in a good position and we had just enough snow on the ground it was all going to work out for us and this warm weather has put a damper on this plan.”

The hill has had some highs and lows in preparation for the season. Their snow generator had been repaired using two donated ones in order to properly prepare for the new year. The water pump was also restarted for opening day.

Mount Joy looks to open on January 12th until the end of March. If the weather doesn’t keep up Peters says an alternative plan is there in order for the ski school to operate.

“Our ski school is a 6-week program that we run, and we have in the past talk about taking the school on the road to another hill with better conditions if we cant get six weeks in at our place, and we’ve never had a situation where that has been the case.”

The delay is minor as the regular season for the hill usually starts up within the first week in January.
