Lloydminster Construction Association looking forward to 10th annual Try-A-Trade expo

The Lloydminster Construction Association has announced a date for its tenth annual Bi-Provincial Try-A-Trade Career Expo. The annual exposition will be at the Exhibition Grounds this spring featuring a variety of career options for students to observe.

The day promotes trades to approximately 1,600 high school students from Lloydminster and the surrounding area. For years the Lloydminster Construction Association has been the head organization behind the expo. Dorothy Carson, executive director of the Lloydminster Construction Association, says that it’s not exclusive to students, and is open to anyone looking to discover a trade.

“We just want to promote the trades, to give them the experience through the hands-on activities and see what the trades have to offer. We ask them to look at it as a first-choice of careers, look at the opportunities going into a trade, the different trades that are available and the opportunities in their communities,” says Carson.

There are 51 designated trades in Alberta. The event tries to get as many trades represented as possible in seven industries, including automotive, piping, metal, electrical and building. The event is also slated to have post-secondary institutions show what they have to offer, including Lakeland College, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Portage College and Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Prospective employers will also be present at the expo.

Carson says that the day is designed to give people a chance to try the trade for themselves. The event is May 1 in the Alberta Building of the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
