Mount Joy closed two weekends in a row

Mount Joy Snow Resort will be closed for the second weekend in a row due to freezing temperatures.

Mount Joy President Dean Peters says there are skiers and snowboarders who are willing to hit the hills in cold temperatures, but it’s the staff he’s worried about.

“For the couple of die-hard people that come out there and want to ski in temperatures like this, it’s not worth putting our outside staff through that, so we just decided to shut down.”

Peters adds that the ski schools wouldn’t see any kids as parents don’t want their children in the extreme cold. Mount Joy began the season the second weekend of January and has already had 5 days they’ve had to close down.

“It takes a chunk out of our season, but I think for safety and peoples comfort that’s just what we do.”

Last season, the hill was closed down for a total of 2 days. Peters says there were a couple of days the hill kept up and running at minus 31. Lift operators had told Peters that they didn’t think it was reasonable to work under those conditions, so he decided to make a change.

“This season is rather unprecedented. All the big hills, Marmot Basin is shut down, last Sunday Table Mountain shutdown and has been closed all this week, so it’s going around for sure.”

Mount Joy hopes that warm weather is in the future next so that the hill can open up next weekend.
