Dates set for DARP public engagement sessions

Lloydminster is inviting residents to share their thoughts in the latest phase of the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP). This four-phase plan provides a multi-year vision and action list to revitalize downtown Lloydminster.

The plan is currently in development and is featuring a second public engagement at The Root on Monday, February 18. The DARP is set to be finalized in July and has four phases to it. Previously, residents were invited to discuss their vision for revitalizing downtown in September. City Councillor and DARP Committee Member, Stephanie Brown Munro, is a big proponent of revitalizing downtown and hopes to see some high engagement from the community.

“It’s really the next step of the engagement process, we’ve had the opportunity to really interact with the public and business owners and get their idea of what an ultimate downtown looks like. O2 planning has put together a draft. They’ve compiled all of the comments and facts they received from our engagement process and have put forth an idea of what the DARP should look like. We want to get the public engagement and how they feel on what they’ve compiled,” says Brown Munro.

This part of Phase 2 allows residents to re-engage and confirm their ideas for the downtown area by voicing their thoughts on a number of topics. Some of these topics include capital improvements needed to rejuvenate the area, financial programs and incentives to increase private investment, and specific programs and elements which will generate activity and attention.

Brown Munro calls downtown areas the heart of our communities. To her, an ideally revitalized downtown would be somewhere people can live, work and play. Brown Munro says that previous sessions have uncovered many deep-rooted community desires and goals. There are some parts of our downtown that she would like to highlight and hopes the finalized plan will help bring people towards our downtown area.

“We really have some amazing areas downtown. The clocktower, and different historical buildings, the border markers and city hall. Everything is in the downtown area, and I just feel like there is a lot to see and I’d really like to get people down there a lot more.”

A number of other engagement events will follow this one. A DARP Open House will come to The Root Event Centre on Thursday, February 21. A pop-up consultation event will be at the Lloydminster Bobcats game on Friday, February 22, and again at the Border City Farmer’s Market on Saturday, February 23.
