Local sled group is donating proceeds from first annual rally

A Lloydminster sled group looks to give back to the community where they’re hosting their first sled rally. Midwest Snow Kings are looking to gather sledders from around Lloydminster to join their first annual event in Marshall, Saskatchewan.

Member Aimee Lemire says a percentage of the proceeds from the event will go back to Telemiracle and the Marshall Legion. Some of the proceeds will also go towards the Midwest Snow Kings and the riders.

“We’re not in it to make any type of profit. We’re in it for a good cause and so everyone could come together, it’s going to be a fun day. Just because we’re holding it in Marshall, we felt like it would be a good thing to give back to the community.”

Lemire adds the legion will also have volunteers on site helping out with the event.

Telemiracle 37 raises funds to provide resources to residents with specialized needs for medical assistance and equipment. The event will be accepting donations for Marshall Telemiracle all day of the event. Co-founder of Midwest Snow Kings Cameron Christian says the groups’ decision to donate proceeds to Telemiracle has to do with the recent downturn in the economy.

“I think we have noticed in the past few years, because of the recession, that we felt that the donations haven’t been what we figured. I thought, [and] my brother thought, that maybe we could help out in this way.”

The group started a Facebook page with 5 members in 2017 looking to bringing snowmobile fans around the area together. The founders thought there wasn’t any group of this nature in the area to bring sledding fans together.

“We like to go out sledding with other people, we like to meet new people, and some people out there don’t know who to go to or who to hang out with while sledding, so it’s good to bring the community together and have a fun day out of it. That’s what brought it all together, just meeting up as a club,” says Lemire

Since its inception, the group has gathered a total of 242 members on Facebook. Lemire believes the traction they’ve been getting on social media is due to the community aspect.

“We’re just a local sled group. On this Facebook page we kept posting “who wants to go for ride?” or just areas that we would go sledding and more and more people showed up every time that we went sledding, so we decided in November to hold a sled rally.”

With Marshall being a usual halfway point for the group, they thought it would be a good place to hold the event seeing as Lloydminster doesn’t have a lot of areas to hold a rally of this size. The group has been in contact with farmers around Marshall to use their land for the track. The sled rally will be on a 60-mile trail. Door prizes along with cash prizes for first, second, and third place will be given out to riders.

Registration for the event will take place from 9 am to 11 am on March 2, 2019 at Marshall Hall. The entry fee for the event is $20 or $25 which includes a beef on a bun supper. $10 will be asked if you’re just looking to join the supper. A live band including a bar and dance will be happening after the event.
