Lloydminster anglers have until the end of the month to remove ice fishing shelters near Highway 16. The Saskatchewan Government says if shelters aren’t removed owners may face charges, and structures along with its contents will be seized.
Shelters south of Highway 16 must be removed before March 15, and structures north of Highway 16 must be removed by March 31. Owners are encouraged to remove shelters due to the high number left behind each year. They say this can cause a danger for boaters and those enjoying lakes in the warmer seasons.
Owners are asked to pick up any garbage that may be left behind once shelters are removed from the ice. Environmental hazards may be caused and pieces could wash up on shore.
Anyone travelling on the ice should be cautious. Saskatchewan reminds residence that slush indicates the top and lower layers of the ice are eroding. Changing temperatures may cause thermal cracks and pressure ridges, which are indicators of unsafe conditions.
