Alberta Party candidate Craig Peterson joins race for Border City seat

Alberta Party candidate Craig Peterson is preparing for his first major campaign in the newly conjoined riding of Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright. Based out of Vermillion, the fifth generation Albertan believes he understands what the province wants.

“My family were farmers, my parents are in the oil business, so I have an idea of what it’s like, especially here in the area, of how the cuts, how some of the NDP policies have failed and seeing the hurt some people have is a huge problem.”

After researching the different platforms, Peterson decided the Alberta Party represented the values of Albertans more than other parties. The grade six Intensive French teacher at St. Mary’s in Lloydminster believes the parties views on education are one of the factors for his decision.

“I really do believe that kids do come first, and some of the education policies that have come out from the UCP just quite frankly scare me, and those aren’t things that I want my own children growing up in a world with.”

“If I can handle a classrom of 30 11-year-olds yelling at me, I think I can handle the candidates forum.”

Last week, Alberta Party leader Stephen Mandel says if elected Premier he would double the number of educational assistants in schools. He believes $230 million in funding would allow extra support in kindergarten to Grade 9 classrooms. Peterson, a former Village of Minburn Councillor, says even though it’s been awhile he is looking forward to knocking on businesses and homes to speak with members of the communities.

“Hopefully they welcome me and ask me questions. I am here to learn as well and understand what people really want and bring that back to the party.”

Across the Constituency, Peterson believes residents with jobs in the oil and gas industry have been affected by policies put in place by the NDP. He believes advancement in new technologies for solar and wind power should be made for the province to benefit.

“There are so many industries here that are so important. Small business, small towns, we need to make sure we’re listening to rural Alberta. There is way more than Edmonton and Calgary in this province and we need to learn to grow rural Alberta as well and make sure those areas thrive and prosper.”

Peterson has continued to spread his message on social media and looks forward to speaking to residents and business owners in the community. Peterson will be taking part in the All Candidates Forum hosted by the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce on April 3. Anyone looking to support Peterson’s campaign can head to the Alberta Party’s website or contact Peterson through his Facebook page.
