Elections Alberta is looking for assistance on April 16 in Lloydminster, Vermilion and Wainwright when residents head to the polls. Returning Officer John Erkelens says election workers should expect a long day starting at 8 am until a little after when polling ends at 8 pm in order to help clean up.

“A lot of people say it’s a feeling of satisfaction to have contributed to making democracy work. Working the election and making sure that people got a chance to vote.”

The paid positions include deputy returning officer, a poll clerk, and a registration officer. Workers will get paid for Election Day and for the couple hours of in-person training held in Lloydminster. Erkelens says the only requirements are availability for training and some computer skills.

“Anybody within the Vermilion, Lloydminster, and Wainwright area can apply. We need people in most places. If they live in, let’s say, Lloydminster and we need someone in Vermilion, if they’re willing to go there we will pay their mileage.”

Polls will be set up in surrounding areas such as Irma, Dewberry and Edgerton. Erkelens says election workers are able to vote, he suggests they head to advance polling stations that will be set up in Lloydminster at the RO office, in Vermilion at  Elk’s Lodge and at the Communiplex in Wainwright. Those looking to apply for an Elections Alberta position for April 16 can head to its website.
