United Conservatives popular among local students

Even though it might be a while until they can vote, local students took part in a mock election to demonstrate the voting process. Results showed that on Tuesday students would have elected a United Conservative Party majority government.

On Monday, Jason Kenney and the UCP won 49 of the 87 ridings along with 36 per cent of the mock vote. Rachel Notley’s NDP came in second with 35 seats and 30 per cent of the popular vote. The Alberta Party picked up the final three seats.

Garth Rowswell won the Vermilion-Lloydminster riding with 2,542 votes coming in from 24 schools within the area. All 87 electoral districts in the province were represented with 1,229 schools participating in the mock vote. A total of 167,527 ballots were cast, with all but 6,000 valid.

During the student vote, Jason Kenny and Rachel Notley held their riding, while David Khan and Stephen Mandel were defeated. The unofficial results of Tuesday’s election project the UCP winning 63 seats, which is 55 per cent of the votes across Alberta.
