First annual Poutine Week a success: Big Brothers Big Sisters

The first annual Poutine Week was a success for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Lloydminster. More than $1,900 was raised by participating restaurants around Lloydminster for kids mentorship programs.

Seven local chefs crafted their own signature poutine to sell at their restaurant from April 11-18. Proceeds went right towards BBBS, with the people of Lloydminster voting for their favourite dish. This year, the People’s Choice Award and the Gravy Bowl Championship for most sold goes to Cedar Kabob’s donair poutine.

Fundraising coordinator Lisa Shendaruk is thrilled with the event’s success. She says the week of celebrating poutines across the city had a great community response, and that it filled many different roles.

“Showcasing our amazing local chef talent, it was a social outing for people, it was great for everybody to be engaged and involved on social media, uploading pictures for their people’s choice award. We were overwhelmed with the positive response from this event,” says Shendaruk.

Shendaruk says that Cedar Kabob was very pleased to be named the winner of both awards. Next year, the event will continue as an annual fundraiser for the mentoring program. Shendaruk says the next Poutine Week will feature some returning restaurants, as well as new ones who’ve expressed interest in participating.

“We’re really excited again to work with our amazing local chef talent, and we’re so grateful for the support and response we’ve had from our local restaurants.”
