Armbenders win big at provincial championship

The local arm wrestling club returned from provincial championships with a number of honours. The Lloydminster Armbenders sent seven of their own to compete, and they returned with thirteen awards.

By the end of the Saskatchewan 2019 Provincials in Moose Jaw on May 4, two members were named provincial championships for their weight classes. Local competitors achieved this honour for both arms, and one was dubbed rookie of the year. A woman from the Armbenders was also named top female and placed second with both arms.

The club has been running for a little over a year. It sees ten regular members participating in practices and competitions. Sometimes competitors passing through from other provinces take part and offer pointers. Sheldon Short is a member and believes the notoriety will mean big things for the club.

“It’s great, it’s awesome for us as a club. Now, all seven of us who competed, we all qualify to compete at the Canadian National Championship in Edmonton. And, if we place in the top 3 at that competition, or if any of us place in the top 3, then we can be part of Team Canada and go compete at the worlds competition,” says Short.

The arm wrestling world championships take place in Poland. With two provincial champions in the club, they hope to draw in some young blood to help build the sport even more. While its a common thing to arm wrestle your friend or family member, Short says there’s more technique to the sport than grabbing someone’s arm and trying to bend it.

The club will be hosting an event at Cheers on June 1, called Fit To Fight. It’s aiming to be a family-friendly event with opportunities for kids, amateurs, pro and belt battles. The sport is open to anyone who wants to try it. Short believes that’s part of the appeal; it’s something everyone has tried at least once all in good fun.

“Everybody’s done it. Everyone has done it, from little kids right up to grown men or grown women doing it on a kitchen table or a front lawn. It’s just a fun sport that really challenged your strength, your abilities, as an individual.”

The club is open to anyone who wants to get involved in the sport. They can be contacted via their Facebook page, and meet on Monday and Thursday evenings. Short says that Lloydminster will be hosting the next Saskatchewan provincial championship sometime in May 2020.
