Sask. Summer Games get assist from Synergy

Synergy Credit Union is helping the city make the upcoming Saskatchewan Summer Games a reality.

Lloydminster will be hosting the 2020 incarnation of the games, which will see some of the best young athletes from around the province competing. The event also brings tourists, coaches and family members to the city. The event also works as a revenue generator for host cities. The 2016 Games in Estevan brought in nearly eight Million dollars for the town in tourist spending and capital development.

Synergy announced Monday morning that they will be the official volunteer sponsor for the games. With that came a cheque presentation for $50,000.

Synergy’s Lloydminster Branch President Gord Thiel says they put the ball in motion after members expressed desire to help with the games.

“We really looked for what was the best fit to show the values that the credit union believes in, the community involvement and volunteerism. We looked at what this sponsorship opportunity actually entailed, and it was a perfect fit.”

It’s estimated that the games will need around 1,200 volunteers to make the games a success. Kevin Kusch, the chair of the 2020 SSG Host Society says Synergy’s help will not only help make the games a success but will also be a massive investment in Lloydminster’s future.

“We said, ‘How do we make this our true legacy for Lloydminster, for years to come?’ So it’s not just this year’s athletes that are going to benefit from it, but how about the future kids that are going to benefit, and the rest of the city of Lloydminster? That’s what we’re really shooting for.”

The Games are slated for July 26th to August 1st, 2020. A call for business sponsors and volunteers will open in early 2020.
