Men’s Shelter invites community to celebrate its 11th Anniversary

The Lloydminster Men’s Shelter continues to open its doors to the community as it celebrates its 11th anniversary. Local residents came by the open house on Wednesday to grab a burger or hot dog and see what the shelter had to offer.

“I think there are some misconceptions about the clients we serve and what we do and we just want people to come in and learn about us,” says Executive Director Valerie Lazicki.

“Although we have a shelter that houses up to 28 men overnight, we provide services to men, women and families,” Lazicki adds the lobby is always open for anyone who is hungry or looking for items such as bedding or clothing.

With the facility tending to reach capacity on extreme days during the summer and winter, Chair of The Lloydminster Social Action Coalition Society Micheal Stonhouse says there are plans for expansion in the near future.

“We’re are looking at a drop-in centre during the day time so that when the folks are out of here there is a place to go that is warm. So, we have a budget for that and we’re working with other agencies to provide the funding and then down the road having a capital campaign that will actually help us expand.”

Stonehouse says the facility serves between 35 to 100 people daily.
